Softball Takes One From Piedmont

Demorest, Ga.- The NC Wesleyan College Softball team split their doubleheader with USA South West Division foe, Piedmont College on Saturday edging the Lions 2-1 in game one before falling 5-4 in game two.

All the runs were scored in the first inning in the first game as the Lady Bishops got out to a 2-0 start on an RBI triple from Nichole Mooney and a sacrifice fly from catcher Kayla Molivas.

Sophomore starter Beth Braswell would relinquish one run in the first before shutting down the Piedmont offense for the remainder of the game throwing 7 innings allowing just 4 hits and one run on 2 walks and 7 strikeouts. Senior DH Shelby Godwin led the Bishops with two hits as well as knocking a double while senior RF Hannah Ivester also had a hit and a run scored.

Game 2: Piedmont 5, NCWC 4

Wesleyan dropped a close game two 5-4 as Piedmont rallied for the win in the 5th scoring two runs to take back the lead from the Bishops,who had just scored the two go ahead runs in the top half of the inning.

Wesleyan scored in the first on an RBI single from Molivas before Mooney tied the game in the third on a solo home run. Wesleyan would take the lead in the 5th on an RBI single from 3B Brianna Myers. However, Piedmont would score the winning two off Bishop starter Shelby Godwin in the 5th. Godwin would pitch all 6 innings allowing 5 hits and 3 earned runs on 3 walks and a strikeout. She also led the offense with 3 hits while Ivester and Myers each recorded multi-hit games.

NC Wesleyan goes to 2-3 overall while Piedmont improves to 3-2. The Bishops are back in action on Wednesday afternoon to host non-conference foe CNU in a 2 PM DH.
