ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College softball team was upended by 6th ranked Christopher Newport University (Va.) on Wednesday falling 7-3 in game one and then 2-0 in game two in a game called after five innings due to darkness.

CNU 7, NCWC 3

Wesleyan would take a 2-1 lead on the Captains after 4 innings on an RBI single from freshman 3B Brianna Myers and an RBI double from sophomore 2B Meredith Booth scoring senior pitcher/DH Shelby Godwin.

CNU would then scratch across two runs in the 5th off sophomore starter Beth Braswell to lead 3-2 before punctuating their lead with 4 in the 6th to put the game away. Wesleyan would add one more in the bottom of the 6th on an RBI single from sophomore shortstop Meredith Mize but could not rally.

Braswell, Booth, and Godwin led with extra-base hits on the day while Braswell, Godwin, and Myers recorded multi-hit games as well as part of the 11-hit attack.

CNU 2, NCWC 0 (5 INNINGS)

The 2nd game of the non-conference DH featured a shortened game due to darkness as the teams played into the 6th inning, but could not complete the inning with CNU edging the Bishops by the slim 2-run margin.

CNU's starting pitcher, Aubrey Bates, shut down the Bishops holding them to just 2 hits and no runs on 3 walks and 3 strikeouts over 5 innings. Godwin started game two on the bump for Wesleyan and also pitched well allowing just 2 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks with 4 strikeouts over 5 innings.

Booth and outfielder Nichole Mooney led NCWC with one hit apiece as the Bishops fall to 2-5 on the year.

Wesleyan was supposed to compete in the Virginia Wesleyan Beach Bash this weekend, but that tournament has been canceled due to rain. Those four games will most likely not be made up. The Bishops will now turn their attention to conference play as they will next host Greensboro College on Tuesday at 2 PM.
