Softball Sweeps away Maryville

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College softball team picked up two quality wins over USA South West Division foe, Maryville College (TN) on Saturday taking game one 3-1 and game two 6-4.

NCWC 3, MARYVILLE 1

Sophomore starter Beth Braswell pitched the Bishops to a game one win allowing just one run on 7 hits over 7 complete innings with 3 walks and 8 strikeouts to improve to 5-2 on the year lowering her ERA to 2.66 along with 45 Ks on the season.

Braswell also got the Lady Bishops on the board first with a big two-run single in the first inning scoring sophomores Meredith Smith and Nichole Mooney. After Maryville got one back in the third to make it 2-1, the Bishops would respond in the sixth on freshman Brianna Myers' RBI single.

Mooney led the offense scoring two runs while stealing two bases with her hit and walk while senior Shelby Godwin also recorded a hit.

NCWC 6, MARYVILLE 4

In game two, Maryville would get out to a 2-0 lead after four innings against starter Shelby Godwin. However, the Lady Bishops would rally back with a huge six-run fifth inning to stake Godwin to a nice 6-2 lead after five.

The scoring in the fifth got started with a RBI single from senior OF Hannah Ivester before consecutive RBI singles from Mooney and Braswell made it 3-2. Smith then broke the game wide open with a bases-clearing 3-run double to make it 6-2.

MC would then attempt to rally themselves in the 7th scoring two two-out runs off Godwin to make it 6-4 but the Bishops would prevail for the sweep. Godwin (3-3) would finish allowing 7 hits and 4 runs (3 earned) over 7 innings walking five, but striking out five as well. Her ERA now stands at 1.79 while she is batting .364 on the year. Godwin and Ivester totaled multi-hit games for the Bishops on the day.

NCWC improves to 8-5 overall with their sixth straight win while Maryville goes to 8-6. The Bishops return to action on Tuesday when they go on the road to face Methodist University at 3 PM.
