Braswell Leads Softball to Split with Peace

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College softball team split their conference series with William Peace University on Senior Day Saturday defeating the Pacers 3-1 in game one but falling 6-1 in game two.

NCWC 3, WPU 1

Sophomore pitcher Beth Braswell led the Bishops in game one with her 3 hits and 7 quality innings allowing just one unearned run. She improved to 10-4 on the year giving up just 5 hits and one run on one walk and 8 strikeouts. She also hit a double with two singles and came around to score on shortstop Meredith Mize's two-run single in the 4th inning that gave the Bishops a 2-1 lead.

Sophomore 1B Bryona Knight then followed with an RBI double herself to score Mize which gave Wesleyan the 3-1 lead after 4 innings. Braswell would then shut them down the rest of the way.

Mize also led the team with 2 stolen bases while sophomore 2B Meredith Booth walked 3 times and stole a base.

WPU 6, NCWC 1

Peace scored 4 runs off senior starter Shelby Godwin in the 4th inning to take a 4-1 lead on the Bishops after Wesleyan's senior LF Kaeli Farnsworth came around to score on a wild pitch in the third. Peace then added 2 more insurance runs in the 7th inning to clinch the win.

Godwin (6-7) threw all 7 innings allowing 11 hits and 6 runs on 3 walks and a strikeout. Leading the Bishops in hits were seniors Farnsworth and RF Hannah Ivester as well as Chelsea Nixon as they all knocked one single apiece.

Wesleyan goes to 16-11 overall and 10-4 in the conference while Peace improves to 12-14 and 7-3 in conference. The Lady Bishops return to action on Tuesday to host Mary Washington Univ. (Va.) at 3 PM.
