Softball Sweeps Mary Washington

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College softball team won two close one-run games to sweep non-conference foe, Mary Washington Univ. (Va.) 6-5 in 8 innings in game one and 3-2 in game two.

NCWC 3, UMW 2

Senior pitcher Shelby Godwin led the Bishops to a game two win pitching 7 solid innings allowing just 2 hits and one earned run on 3 walks and 3 strikeouts to get her 7th win.

After UMW scored two runs in the third, sophomore SS Meredith Mize got the Bishops back on the board first with an RBI double in the third inning diriving in senior RF Hannah Ivester who had singled. Sophomore DH Beth Braswell then followed with an RBI single that drove in sophomore CF Nichole Mooney. Wesleyan then added the go-ahead run as sophomore 1B/C Summer Phillips reached base via UMW error driving in Mize.

Godwin then took care of the rest shutting down the Lady Eagles for the rest of the game. Ivester and Mize led with multi-hit games while Molivas also recorded a hit in game two.

NCWC 6, UMW 5 (8 innings)

The Lady Bishops walked off with a win in game one on Mooney's game-winning RBI single that drove in pinch-runner Meredith Smith.

UMW took a first inning 2-0 lead on a home run before the Bishops rallied back with 3 runs in the 2nd. Ivester drove in the first on an RBI single while Mize followed with a two-run single to center. After the Eagles took a 4-3 lead in the 5th on a RBI walk from Braswell, the Bishops struck back with an rbi single in the bottom half off the bat of 3B/C Kayla Molivas to make it 4-4.

LF Rylee Wheeler then scored on a wild pitch in the 6th to give NCWC a 5-4 lead. UMW then squeaked out a run in the top of the 7th with two outs off Braswell, the starter for game one. She then held the Eagles off in the 8th so her team could win it. Braswell threw all 8 innings allowing 8 hits and 5 runs on 3 walks and 8 strikeouts to improve to 11-4 with a 2.01 ERA and 98 Ks.

The Bishops improve to 18-11 on the season while UMW falls to 15-14. Wesleyan is back in action this weekend with a conference DH at Mary Baldwin University (Va.).
