Softball Sweeps DH from Averett 2-1 & 4-0

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College Softball team edged rival Averett University 2-1 in game one of their doubleheader on Saturday from Edge Field.

The game was scoreless until the 6th inning when senior Pitcher Beth Braswell doubled in senior CF Nichole Mooney and junior LF Logan Winstead , who had walked and singled respectively, giving Wesleyan a 2-0 lead.

Braswell then gave up a leadoff solo home run in the 7th, but then got the next three batters out to end the game. She finished going all 7 innings allowing just one run on 6 hits with zero walks and 4 strikeouts to improve to 6-2 on the year.

Offensively, other than Winstead and Braswell, senior SS Meredith Mize also singled while Mooney stole a base.

GAME 2: NCWC 4, AVERETT 0

In game two, the Lady Bishops opened the scoring in the second frame with an RBI triple by senior 3B Kayla Molivas before adding another run on the following at-bat with a sac fly from catcher Summer Phillips.

NCWC then plated two more runs in the fifth inning after a foul out sac fly brought home a runner from third while Mooney scored from second following a throwing error making it 4-0. 

Senior starting pitcher Grace Preston then finished out her first win of the season (1-4) with a complete game 7-inning shutout. She yielded just four hits, walked five, and struck out three batters.

Offensively, Braswell led with a double while Molivas had her triple.

Wesleyan improves to 8-6 overall and 4-0 in conference while AU drops to 7-11 overall and 3-3 in USA South play.

The Bishops will return to action on Thursday when they remain home to host William Peace in 2PM conference action.
