Captains Take Down Bishops in League Play, 57-47

Rocky Mount, N.C. - In Wednesday night women's basketball action, Christopher Newport picked up a 57-47 USA South victory over homestanding North Carolina Wesleyan in Everett Gymnasium. With the win, the Captains improved to 7-3 overall, 2-1 in league play, while the Bishops now stand at 4-4 on the season, 1-2 in conference action.

CNU held a 27-20 lead at the break as both teams struggled to find an offensive rhythm. Tied at 16-16, the Captains managed an 11-4 run over the final 7:20 to forge the 7-point halftime advantage.

The Bishops got as close a three, 27-24, with back-to-back baskets by Monet Edwards and Samantha Urquhart to open the second half. CNU, however, countered with eight unanswered points to go up 11, and Wesleyan would get no closer than eight the rest of the way.

Urquhart and sophomore Shanice Goree paced the Bishops with 11 points apiece. Urquhart added eight rebounds and Goree three steals.

For the Captains, Tia Perry netted a game-high 12 points. She was complimented by Nicole Mitchell and Andrea Hobbs with 11 and 10, respectively.

As a team, CNU shot 39 percent from the floor compared to the Bishops' 28 percent, while both teams managed 41 rebounds.

Wesleyan continues USA South play on Saturday when they visit Greensboro College.
