Newport News, Va. - North Carolina Wesleyan out-scored Christopher Newport 47-43 in the second half, but it would not be enough to erase a 13-point halftime deficit as the Captains downed the Bishops by an 84-75 score in Tuesday's USA South women's basketball action.

The Captains (16-3, 11-1 USA South) raced out to a 41-28 halftime lead behind Nicole Mitchell's 13 points in the period. NCWC freshman Derreon Cole did her part to keep the Bishops in the game, netting 10 first half points of her own.

CNU continued to maintain control for most of the second half until Wesleyan's Tiffany Bell capped a furious Bishop rally with back-to-back treys that made the score 80-75 in favor of the Captains with 29 seconds remaining.

Forced to foul, the Bishops watched as CNU's Jerlisa Bowser and Mitchell each knocked down 2-of-2 at the charity stripe to secure the Captains' 16th win of the season.

Bell finished with a team-high 18 points on 5-of-6 shooting. She was joined in double figures by Cole, Shelby Jackson and Linesha Tinsley with 10 each.

For CNU, Mitchell tallied a game-high 28 points to pace four Captains in double figures.

Wesleyan (9-8, 6-6 USA South) returns to action this Saturday at home when the Bishops host Greensboro College at 2:00pm in Everett Gymnasium. Saturday is Alumni Day for NCWC's basketball teams, while the Department of Athletics will also be sponsoring "Sixth Man Saturday" and giving out free t-shirts to the first 100 students, faculty and/or staff to present their Wesleyan IDs.
