Bishops Win League Opener Versus Piedmont, 79-78

Rocky Mount, N.C. - Senior Samantha Urquhart scored her team's final six points, including the game-winning free throw with .2 seconds on the clock, to give her Battling Bishops a 79-78 win over Piedmont College on Saturday afternoon in Everett Gym. The game was the USA South opener for both squads.

The first half featured four ties before the Bishops took their first lead, 13-11, on a pair of free throws by sophomore Derreon Cole. After two more ties, a 12-3 run by Wesleyan gave the Bishops a 34-25 advantage with 4:01 remaining. The run saw four different Bishops net buckets, highlighted by Shanice Goree and Leann Breeden treys.

The Lions recovered to out-score NCWC 9-4 over the last four minutes of the period for 38-34 Bishop lead at the half.

Wesleyan opened the second half with a 9-2 run that gave the Bishops their largest advantage, 47-36, at the 17:47 mark. Piedmont, however, continued to chip away at the lead, eventually knotting the game at 55-55 with just over 12 minutes remaining.

Over the next ten minutes, the Bishops would twice go back up by five points only to see the Lions battle back for the game's 10th and 11th ties, the latter coming at 73-73 with 2:30 remaining. An Urquhart lay-up pushed Wesleyan back in front, but after trading scoreless possessions, Piedmont answered with an Alyssa Jones three-pointer with 36 seconds left to give the Lions their first lead since early in the first half, 76-75.

Urquhart again came up big on Wesleyan's next possession, converting an old-fashioned three-point play to give her team a two-point lead with 20 ticks on the clock. Jones countered to provide the 12th and final tie of the contest when she drove the lane for a short jumper for a 78-78 score.

With seven seconds left, sophomore NeTaih Davis took the ball from half-court and pulled up for a jumper at the free throw line that resulted in a huge offensive rebound by Courtney Small, who dished to Urquhart under the basket. The Lions were whistled for a foul with .2 seconds remaining, and the senior captain calmly sank 1-of-2 free throws to give NCWC the one-point victory.

Despite playing only 17 minutes, Urquhart finished with a team-high 17 points and eight rebounds. She was joined in double-figures by Goree and Davis with 13 and 12, respectively. Kourtney Salisbury and Tiffany Bell chipped in 11 apiece, while Small had eight rebounds, five blocks and four assists.

The Lions (4-2, 0-1 USA South) were paced by Lauren Hamel and Jones with 18 apiece. Lauren Anderson added a double-double of 12 points and 10 boards.

Statistically, the difference in the game came at the charity stripe where NCWC shot 79.3 percent (23-of-29) to PC's 57.6 percent (19-of-33).

The Bishops (2-4, 1-0 USA South) continue USA South play on Sunday when they host LaGrange College. Tip-off is slated for 2:00pm in Everett Gym.
