Team Effort Leads to Women's Win over LaGrange

Rocky Mount, N.C. - The women's basketball team of N.C. Wesleyan moved to 2-0 in USA South play with an 82-78 victory over LaGrange College on Sunday afternoon in Everett Gym. Sophomore Courtney Small turned in a solid all-around performance with 11 points, a team-high eight rebounds, four assists and a blocked shot.

Taking the court after an emotional one-point win over Piedmont on Saturday, the Bishops started slow on Sunday, falling behind 19-8 at the 11:01 mark of the first half. Junior Tiffany Bell's driving lay-up, however, ignited a 15-3 Wesleyan run over the next five minutes that put the Bishops back on top. They went on to hold a slim 33-32 lead at the break.

Wesleyan came out on fire in the second half, out-scoring the Panthers 17-5 over the first six minutes of the period for a 50-37 advantage. After a timeout, LaGrange regrouped and put together a 15-0 run of its own for a 52-50 lead at the 10:49 mark.

Bell proceeded to provide the game's sixth tie on NCWC's next possession, and a pair of defensive stops led to back-to-back treys from Monet Edwards and Jaleesa Honesty to push the Bishops back up by six. While the Panthers would tie the game three more times, Wesleyan would never trail again.

In addition to Small, four other Bishops reached double-figures. Bell and Samantha Urquhart finished with 15 apiece, while Edwards and Kourtney Salisbury each had 10. As a team, the Bishops shot nearly 43 percent from the floor and held the Panthers to just over 30 percent accuracy.

The Bishops (3-4, 2-0 USA South) will now break for exams and the holidays before returning to action on Sunday, December 30th at home versus Lynchburg College. Tip-off is slated for 3:00pm in Everett Gym.
