Rocky Mount, N.C. - The Battling Bishop women's basketball team shocked #16 Christopher Newport on Wednesday night, upsetting the previously unbeaten Captains by a 69-68 score in Everett Gymnasium. Senior Samantha Urquhart turned in a stellar game with 16 points and 15 rebounds, while Monet Edwards (pictured) and NeTaih Davis added 10 points apiece.

The Captains (13-1, 6-1 USA South) led by as many as 11 in the first half, 31-20, with 3:26 remaining. The Bishops, however closed out the period with a 12-5 run to cut the deficit to five at the break, 37-32. The span featured four points each from Urquhart and Davis.

The second half saw CNU go back up by ten, 52-42, less than five minutes in. Wesleyan again answered with a key run, this time a 13-3 spurt that knotted the score at 55-55 with 10:59 remaining. The Bishops went 6-for-6 at the charity stripe during the five-minute span, which was highlighted by a Shanice Goree three-pointer from the top of the key.

From there, the game featured two more ties before Wesleyan was able to take its first lead of the half, 60-59, on Edwards' second trey of the game. The lead was shortlived though, as the final 7:25 saw the two squads fight through five more ties and eight lead changes.

CNU last led with 3:33 remaining after Camry Green hit a pair free throws that made the score 68-67. Both teams went scoreless on their next two possessions, which included a pivotal block and rebound by Urquhart in the paint.

At the 1:00 mark, NCWC's Courtney Small came up with the biggest play of her Bishop career thusfar. The sophomore guard forced the Captains' 24th turnover of the contest and converted a breakaway lay-up that proved to be the gamewinning basket, sealing the Bishops' first victory over CNU since the 2004-2005 season.

Overall, the game boasted 14 lead changes and eight ties. Wesleyan's defensive pressure forced the Captains into just 22 percent shooting in the second half and led to 19 points off turnovers.

With the win, Wesleyan moves to 5-2 in USA South play heading into this weekend's games at Maryville and Ferrum. Maryville currently sits atop the league standings at 7-0, while Ferrum boasts a 6-1 conference mark. Both games are slated for 2:00pm tip-offs.
