Wesleyan Hoops Season Ends in Tourney Semifinals

Fayetteville, N.C. - The N.C. Wesleyan women's basketball team saw its season come to an end on Saturday afternoon in the semifinals of the 2013 USA South Conference Tournament. The 4th-seeded Bishops dropped a hardfought 79-70 decision to top-seeded Ferrum College, bringing to an end the careers of four-year seniors Samantha Urquhart and Leann Breeden.

Wesleyan hung with the nationally-ranked Panthers early, forging a 22-17 lead midway through the period. Ferrum erased the deficit with a 14-0 run over a three-minute span that saw Urquhart go to the bench with her third foul. The Bishops, however, rebounded for a late run of their own thanks to a trio of three-pointers from Amanda Sherman, Monet Edwards and Breeden. Ferrum would eventually take a six-point lead into the break, 41-35.

The Panthers caught a crucial break just 10 seconds into the final period when Urquhart was whistled for her fourth foul. Despite playing without without their senior captain for most of the period, the Bishops hung tough as Shanice Goree and Edwards stepped up offensively with 18 and 17 points, respectively, to keep Wesleyan within striking distance.

Urquhart returned around the eight-minute mark and managed a solid end to a stellar a career. Her offensive rebound and putback with 29 seconds left provided the final score and gave her eight points and six rebounds on the day. Breeden finished with five points and three rebounds, while Tiffany Bell joined Goree and Edwards in double-figures with 12 points.

Ferrum's size down low played a major role the victory as post players Kylene Culler, Katy Kipps and Kelsey Frazier combined for 43 points, 26 rebounds and 21 of the team's 33 free throws on the day.

Urquhart completes her career as the program's 7th all-time leading scorer with 1,125 points and 2nd all-time leading rebounder with 772 boards, just 13 shy of the NCWC record.  Additionally, the three-time All-Conference player and reigning Student-Athlete of the Year set a new program best for career free throws made with 386.

As a team, Wesleyan finishes the season with a 13-14 overall record. The 13 wins and 11 conference victories are the most since the 2001-2002 season, and the Bishops' semifinal appearance is also the first in over a decade.
