Bishop Women Host Inaugural Jean Edge Classic

Rocky Mount, N.C. - The Battling Bishops of North Carolina Wesleyan opened their 2013-14 women's basketball slate on Saturday and Sunday, hosting the inaugural Jean Edge Classic in Everett Gymnasium. Case Western Reserve went 2-0 in the tourney, picking up wins over the host Bishops and Methodist University, who each downed Wesley College for their first wins of the season.

On Saturday, Case Western and Methodist opened up play, with the Spartans picking up a 55-43 win behind Laura Mummey's double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds.

N.C. Wesleyan then took the court against Wesley and forged a 41-27 lead at the break thanks to the play of seniors Tiffany Bell and Shanice Goree, who combined for more than half of the Bishops' points in the period. NCWC went on to lead by as many as 23 in the second half en route to a 73-60 victory.

Goree finished with a game-high 23 points and seven assists, while Bell and Kourtney Salisbury netted 19 and 11 points, respectively. Fellow senior Monet Edwards grabbed 11 rebounds.

Sunday's action kicked off with the Bishops and Spartans taking the court. Case Western never trailed in the contest, opening the game with an 8-0 run and securing an eventual 41-30 lead at intermission. The Bishops opened the second half with a 15-7 run of their own, capped by a Salisbury lay-up at the 13:58 mark that made the score 48-45.

Unfortunately, the Bishops would get no closer as the Spartans pulled away down the stretch behind the play of Mummey and Brooke Orcutt. Both finished with double-doubles, with Mummey's 23 points topping the stat sheet.

For Wesleyan, Bell managed a team-high 15 points, while Salisbury added 11 points and six assists. Junior NeTaih Davis chipped in 10 points off the bench.

The final action of the weekend saw Methodist down Wesley by a 67-56 tally. The Monarchs' Maya Banks scored a team-high 21 points, while the Wolverines' Brionna Johnson followed up her 22 points and 22 rebounds versus NCWC with another 27 points and 11 boards.
