Rocky Mount, N.C. - Senior Shanice Goree knocked down a three-pointer with three seconds remaining in overtime to lift her Battling Bishop women's basketball team past Covenant College on Friday night in Everett Gymnasium, 75-72. The win secured a split in this weekend's USA South action, as Wesleyan went on to drop a 65-47 decision to Maryville College on Saturday.

Against Covenant on Friday, the Bishops fell behind by nine points early in the second half when a Haley Soles trey made the score 36-27 in favor of the Scots. Wesleyan answered with a 13-2 run to take a 40-38 lead at the 13:35 mark thanks to a combined 11 points from Goree and Tiffany Bell.

A back-and-forth battle from there, the two squads found themselves tied 51-51 with 6:37 to go. Wesleyan proceeded to score six of the game's next seven points for a 57-52 advantage at the 4:48 mark, only to see Covenant counter with a 7-1 run of its own to take a 59-58 lead with 1:25 remaining. Buckets by Goree and Monet Edwards, however, sandwiched a trio of Scot free throws to force the 12th tie of the contest, 60-60, and send the game into overtime.

Covenant netted the first four points of the OT period and eventually held a 69-67 lead at the 1:09 mark. Freshman Kenyata Harris converted a lay-up with 51 ticks left to knot the score, while a key steal by Kourtney Salisbury led to a Bell three-point play that gave the Bishops a 72-69 lead with 42 seconds to go.

In a game that featured a total of 14 ties and 14 lead changes, the final 30 seconds did not disappoint. After the Bishops failed to ice the game at the charity stripe, Covenant was able to tie the game once more when Soles was fouled behind the arc and calmly sank all three free throws. But there would be no double overtime. Tied 72-72, Bell found Goree at the top of the key for the game-winning trey with three seconds on the clock, giving Wesleyan its second USA South victory.

Bell and Goree finished with 23 points apiece, while Harris had nine points and eight rebounds.

On Saturday, both teams got off to sluggish starts, but it was Maryville that righted the ship with a 20-4 run midway through the first half to forge 16-point lead that they would not relinquish. The Bishops shot just 27 percent from the floor on the day en route to the 18-point defeat.

Bell again paced NCWC with 11 points, while Goree pulled down 11 boards.

Wesleyan (4-6, 2-2 USA South) returns to action on Wednesday night at home when the Bishops host a league tilt with Meredith College at 7:30pm.
