Wesleyan Drops Heartbreaker to Angels after Routing MBC

Rocky Mount, N.C. - N.C. Wesleyan's women's basketball team hosted its final two home games of the season over the weekend, downing Mary Baldwin on Saturday before dropping a 1-point heartbreaker to Meredith on Sunday. The two games were part of the Bishops' annual Play 4Kay weekend, which saw NCWC raise money for breast cancer awareness.

On Sunday, Meredith forged a 32-24 lead at the half after holding the Bishops to just 29 percent accuracy from the floor. Wesleyan began chipping away at the deficit in the third quarter, and after opening the fourth with a 5-0 run, the Bishops took their first lead since the opening half, 49-48, at the 7:37 mark.

The Angels (8-14, 6-7 USA South) countered with an 8-2 run of their own to go back up five with 5:51 to go, but Wesleyan again answered down the stretch, eventually holding a 3-point advantage at 67-64 with a minute left to play. Unfortunately, a pair of missed free throws by the Bishops was followed by two Meredith makes to pull the Angels to within one, 67-66.

On NCWC's next possession, a costly charge gave the Angels a shot at the win, and Ashley Hudson's jumper in the paint put MC on top 68-67 with 27 seconds left.  Wesleyan proceeded to get three shots off in the final six seconds to no avail. Overall, the game featured eight ties and ten lead changes.

For the Bishops, sophomore KeChae Parker netted 18 points, while Timyra Staton had 12. Both Parker and Staton pulled down seven rebounds on the day. Kim Hinton led five Angels in double-figures with 15 points.

The loss came on the heels of a 99-60 victory over Mary Baldwin College on Saturday. Freshman Jermaiyah Baker poured in a career high 20 points on 10-of-14 shooting. As a team, Wesleyan knocked down 52 percent of its shots on the day.

The Bishops (9-15, 6-9 USA South) will wrap up their regular season slate next Saturday at Methodist University. Tip-off is slated for 2:00pm in Fayetteville.
