ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College women's basketball team won their 5th straight game on Sunday afternoon swatting away the Fighting Squirrels of Mary Baldwin University (Va.) 74-62 at home. The Bishops got some revenge on MBU as the Squirrels squeaked out a one-point win over the Bishops just 11 days ago.

Leading scorer, sophomore guard Kayla Johnson again led the Bishops in scoring with 21 points and three 3s on the day along with a season-high of 9 rebounds, 2 assists and a block.

Wesleyan, who improves to 8-9 overall and 6-2 in the conference, moves into first place in the East Division of the USA South with the win.

A slow start by both teams saw MBU (12-7, 6-4) carry a slim 17-16 lead after one quarter with each team shooting less than 30 percent. A strong second period by the Bishops saw Wesleyan shoot 42 percent and score 20 points to lead 36-30 at the break.

Wesleyan kept up their quality play in the third outscoring MBU 23-12 by shooting 50 percent in the quarter and 40 percent from three including 5 straight baskets by Johnson at one point to lead 59-42 after three. After NCWC stretched their lead out to 22 at one point to start the fourth, the Squirrels made a mini comeback, but could never get within 10 points as they fell in the end. 

Wesleyan pounded MBU on the offensive glass 23-14 and overall 63-44 led by Javana Jones' team-high 12 rebounds as she also posted 13 points for her double-double. Jones would also register 2 blocks with a steal while senior forward Weslie Young also finished in double-digit scoring with 11 points and 8 rebounds. Guards Nadiya Holley and Cydney Nichols also combined for 16 rebounds, 3 assists, and 5 points on the afternoon with senior guard Daijah Davis also chipping in 7 points with 4 boards and 3 assists.

The Bishop women are next in action next Saturday, Jan. 19 when they travel to nearby rival Meredith College for a 2 PM tip-off.

Fun Fact of the weekend: The men's and women's basketball teams are now a combined 8-0 since Jan. 5. The men return to action Wednesday at Peace.
