Bishop Women Cruise past Salem

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College women's basketball team rolled past visiting conference foe Salem College (N.C.) 89-58 at home to sweep their weekend foes on Sunday inside Everett Gym.

Wesleyan got out to a strong 13-0 lead in the first quarter before heading to the second up 24-11 as Salem struggled shooting the ball whereas the Bishops started off hot. Wesleyan ended up shooting 43 percent in the first half and 35 percent from long range as they scored 28 points in the second including another buzzer-beating three to end the first half by guard Leah Wright. The Bishops led 52-26 at the break.

With the big lead, Wesleyan would naturally take their foot off the gas but still won each quarter in the second half outscoring the Spirits 20-18 in the third and 17-14 in the fourth while holding Salem to just 14 percent shooting to grab the 30 point win.

The Bishops finished the game shooting 41 percent from the floor and a perfect 100 percent from the free-throw line while all 12 active members of the Bishop squad would score at least 2 points on the day. They were led by sophomore forward Javana Jones' second straight double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds along with 2 assists and a steal while fellow sophomore guard Cydney Nichols also tallied 13 points off the bench.

Senior guard Jermaiyah Baker was the thrid member of the Bishops to finish in double-figures posting 11 points with 3 rebounds and a block while fellow guard, sophomore Kayla Johnson, the hero of yesterday's win, also scored 9 points with a block and a team-high 3 steals. Senior forward Weslie Young also had a strong game finishing with 8 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 blocks while fellow senior, Nadiya Holley collected 5 boards with 8 points, an assist and a steal.

The point guard duo of Daijah Davis and Keorra Taylor combined for 8 points, 9 rebounds, and 7 assists including a team-high of four assists form Taylor while Wright also added 8 points on the game. Wesleyan would also out-rebound Salem 73-45 overall and 24-18 on the offensive end with forward Kneciya Tripp also pulling down 8 boards while posting 2 assists and 2 steals as well. 

Wesleyan improves to 10-12 overall and 8-5 in the conference with the win while dropping last-place Salem to 1-20 overall and 1-12 in the league.

The Bishops are next back on the road to battle Averett University (Va.) on Wednesday at 6:00 PM.
