DANVILLE, Va. - The NC Wesleyan College women's basketball team dropped their conference game to Averett University (Va.) 61-54 on the road Wednesday night.

The Bishop women made a valiant comeback in the second half including outscoring the Cougars by five, 29-24 and 16-13 in the fourth, but it was not enough in the end as their low-scoring second quarter of 6 points came back to haunt them.

Each team struggled shooting the ball for the night with the Bishops going just 31 percent from the floor and only 23 percent from three while Averett was not much better, shooting just 34 percent overall and only making two threes all night. The free throw disparity was the difference as AU attempted 18 freebies, making 11 while NCWC attempted only four.

Senior guard Nadiya Holley led the Battling Bishops with a team-high of 17 points on 8 of 16 shooting along with 8 rebounds while fellow senior guard, Daijah Davis, also tied her season-high with 12 points, along with 2 assists, as they were the only Bishops in double-figures for the night.

Defensively, senior forward Weslie Young and sophomore forward Javana Jones played well with Young pulling down a team-best and season-high of 14 rebounds along with a team-high of 3 steals and a block. Jones also tied her season-high with 3 blocks along with 5 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and a steal.

Sophomore guards Cydney Nichols and Keorra Taylor also combined for 9 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, and 3 steals for the game.

The Bishops fall to 10-13 overall and 8-6 in the conference with the loss while first place Averett improves to 15-7 and 11-3 in the USA SOUTH.

Wesleyan now has a week off until their final regular season road game when they take on Peace University next Wednesday at 7:30 PM.
