Women Fly Past Angels on Senior Day and Play4Kay

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The N.C. Wesleyan women's basketball team used the energy from an enthusiastic crowd on the annual Play4Kay "pink" game to go on and defeat rival Meredith College 74-63 on Senior Day Saturday.

Sophomore forward Javana Jones led the Bishops with a career game of 23 points and 12 rebounds along with 4 steals and 4 blocks to help the Bishops to their 11th overall win and a 9-7 conference mark.

The women clinched the 5 seed in the East Division with the win and will face #4 seed Mary Baldwin University (Va.) (16-9, 10-6) on the road Wednesday evening in the first round of the USA SOUTH tournament at 6 PM.

Even though Jones was the only Bishop to finish in double-figures in points, senior forward Weslie Young came close finishing with 9 points and a season-high of 15 rebounds along with two blocks while senior guard Daijah Davis and sophomore guard Kayla Johnson also each finished with 9 points apiece. Johnson also added 3 rebounds, 2 steals and an assist while senior guard Nadiya Holley scored 6 points with 5 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal in her final home game.

Wesleyan got out to a strong 10-2 lead in the first quarter as Jones scored the Bishops' first 8 points. Wesleyan would lead 18-10 after one quarter before extending their advantage to 11 at halftime leading 33-22 as they shot 39 percent in the first half.

The two rivals would then score the same amount of points in each quarter of the second half totaling 41 apiece as Wesleyan pulled away for the 11-point win with a late scoring run after Meredith had trimmed their lead to five.

NC Wesleyan (11-14) would impressviely out-rebound the Angels 60-34 and 30-10 on the offensive boards as well. Meredith falls to 7-18 overall and 7-9 in the conference with the loss as they get the 6 seed in the upcoming conference tournament.
