NCWC's Givens Named USA South Player of the Year

Fayetteville, N.C. - The USA South Athletic Conference has announced its 2012-2013 All-Conference awards for men's basketball with a total of 23 student-athletes being honored. N.C. Wesleyan's Brandon Givens was named Player of the Year, becoming the third Battling Bishop in program history to earn the award. Other Bishops earning recognition were Josh Morrison picking up an Honorable Mention nod and fellow junior David Gurganus being named to the league's All-Sportsmanship team.

Givens, a Ruffin, South Carolina senior forward, led the Conference in scoring average, rebounding average, defensive rebounds, minutes played, free throws made and free throws attempted. He averaged a league-best 27.1 points and 9.6 rebounds per contest, and his scoring average is currently just .2 points behind the single-season Conference record. Givens' 255 made free throws and 321 attempted free throws, however, are new USA South single-season highs, as well as Wesleyan bests.

Earlier this season, Givens poured in 50 points in a double-overtime win over Christopher Newport to set the new Conference and program single-game record for points scored. Finally, the First Team All-Conference honoree accumulated six USA South Player of the Week honors this winter.

Morrison garners the first recogniton of his career as an Honorable Mention. The Chapel Hill native currently ranks second on the team in scoring at 10.4 points per game and leads the team in assists with 59.

Elsewhere around the league, Ferrum's JD Wallace and his coach Bill Tharp were named Rookie and Coach of the Year, respectively.
