Wesleyan Men Drop Pair at South Region Classic

Hampden-Sydney, Va. - The Battling Bishop men's basketball team dropped a pair of contests at this weekend's South Region Classic, falling to Shenandoah by an 87-80 score on Friday before dropping a 90-73 decision to host Hampden-Sydney on Saturday.

Friday's game versus Shenandoah featured nine ties and seven lead changes. The Bishops, who led by as many as ten points midway through the first half, held a slim 38-36 lead at the break.

Wesleyan later clung to a 70-67 advantage with 6:04 to go thanks to a three-pointer from sophomore D.J. Weaver that erased a 70-70 tie. The Hornets, however, countered with an 8-0 run that put them on top 75-70 at the 4:25 mark, and they went on to seal the win by going 6-of-8 at the charity stripe down the stretch.

Senior Josh Morrison paced the Bishops with a team-high 16 points, while freshman Marcus Williams and Weaver finished with 14 and 13, respectively. Senior David Gurganus dished out five assists, and sophomore Devontae Williams pulled down 10 rebounds.

On Saturday, the host Tigers opened the game with a 13-0 run and never trailed en route to the 17-point victory. A strong second half effort saw the Bishops out-score H-SC 44-41 in the period, but it would not be enough to erase a 49-29 halftime deficit.

Morrison again led the Bishops with 18 points, and Marcus Williams added 16. NCWC's Jesse Simpson also reached double-figures with 11 points on the day.

Now 3-2 overall, Wesleyan returns to action on Tuesday when the Bishops travel to Mary Washington for a 5:00pm tip-off with the Eagles.
