Wesleyan Men Honor Seniors, Down Ferrum 72-58

Rocky Mount, N.C. - N.C. Wesleyan's men's basketball team celebrated its 2014 senior day on Sunday afternoon with a 72-58 win over Ferrum College in Everett Gymnasium. The Bishops, who closed out the first half with a 16-0 run to take control of the game, honored four-year letterwinners Josh Morrison and David Gurganus prior to tip-off.

In the first half, the Bishops found themselves down 31-28 after Ferrum's Tyler Mann knocked a three-pointer with 6:15 left in the period. Wesleyan countered with 16 unanswered points, highlighed by a thunderous dunk and acrobatic lay-up by Devontae Williams on back-to-back possessions with less that two minutes to go. The Bishops took a 44-31 lead into the break.

The Panthers managed to cut the lead to single digits on two occasions in the second half, the latter coming at 59-50 at the 8:14 mark. Wesleyan, however, again answered with a big run by out-scoring their opponents 13-2 over the next five minutes to go up 20 and essentially seal the victory. The run featured huge treys by Gurganus, Morrison and sophomore D.J. Weaver.

Weaver paced the Bishops with 15 points, and Williams finished with 12 points of his own. Freshman Marcus Williams added 10 points off the bench, while Morrison and Gurganus combined for 19 points, eight rebounds and eight assists.

As a team, Wesleyan dominated the glass by a 42-26 margin.

The Bishops (13-12) wrap up their league slate with an 8-6 mark and will enter next weekend's USA South Conference Tournament as the #5 seed. Wesleyan will take on 4th-seeded LaGrange College on Thursday at 5:00pm on the campus of top-seeded Maryville College.
