Former Bishop David Gurganus Joins Coaching Staff

Rocky Mount, N.C. - Former Battling Bishop David Gurganus has called North Carolina Wesleyan home for the past four years as a member of the men's basketball program, and thanks to an offer of employment signed last week, the Goldsboro native will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. Pictured right with President Dewey Clark and Vice President Judy Rollins, Gurganus has accepted a position as a full-time admissions counselor with the College, which also offers the aspiring coach an opportunity to gain valuable experience on the sidelines as a member of Wesleyan's basketball staff.

Gurganus recently completed his four-year career for head coach John Thompson, serving as the Bishops' starting point guard and team captain as a senior. A two-time member of the USA South's All-Sportsmanship team, he tallied over 200 points and 200 assists during his tenure and never suffered a losing season. Off the court, Gurganus received his team's 2013-14 Scholar-Athlete Award and was proud to serve as president of North Carolina Wesleyan's Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Exercise Science Clubs.

"I am so excited to be joining my alma mater as both an admissions counselor and basketball coach," said Gurganus. "Becoming a college coach is something I've been looking forward to my whole life, and being able to do that at Wesleyan makes this step even more special."

Having received his bachelor's degree in Exercise Science in early May, Gurganus looks forward to transitioning from teammate to coach in the coming weeks and understands the adjustments that will need to be made.

"I've always believed that you must show respect to earn it," he said. "That's the attitude I took as a team captain, and it is the same attitude I will take as a coach. I am positive that the guys will respond to that kind of leadership and make this an easy transition for me."

In addition to his admissions duties, Gurganus will play a vital role in Wesleyan's recruiting, scouting and on-floor coaching efforts, adding, "Working for Wesleyan will be like working for family. I am so appreciative to the College for this opportunity."
