Rocky Mount, N.C. - North Carolina Wesleyan's lacrosse team dropped a heartbreaking 8-6 decision to Hollins University on Sunday afternoon at Scalf Field. With the score knotted at 6-6 with 15 minutes remaining, Hollins tallied the final two goals of the match to erase the tie and steal the victory.

Wesleyan (0-3) had jumped out to a 4-2 lead midway through the first half thanks to scores by junior Jade Gold, senior Ashley Marks and a pair by freshman Haley Hopkins. Hollins countered with four unanswered goals over a five minute span, but Marks would convert an extra-man opportunity as time expired to make the score 6-5 in favor of HU at the break.

The second half saw NCWC's Hopkins tie the score at 6-6 less than three minutes in on an assist from Gold. Goalies Marissa Santos and Corrine Nicholson proceeded to hold their opponents in check over the next 13 minutes to keep the tie in tact.

Hollins would eventually get the go-ahead score at the 14:47 mark on an unassisted goal by Lindley Taylor. HU later added an insurance goal with 3:49 to go after Gold was sidelined with her second penalty.

The Bishops, however, did not go down without a fight, creating a pair of free position shots in the final three minutes. Unfortunately, Nicholson was up to the task with her ninth and tenth saves of the match to seal the win. Santos, too, finished with ten saves on the day.

Hopkins finished with a trio of goals, while Marks tallied two scores and an assist. Connor Wright added five ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Meg O'Brien paced HU with three goals of her own, and Chanci Wright fielded seven ground balls on the day.

HU held a slim 27-22 advantage in shots, while NCWC won the draw control battle, 9-7.

The Bishops open up USA South play on Wednesday at Meredith College. The match is slated for a 5:00pm start in Raleigh.
