Rocky Mount, N.C. - The North Carolina Wesleyan Department of Athletics hosted its 47th Annual Awards Ceremony on Monday, April 16th, in the Garner Lobby of the Dunn Center. Coaches, staff and student-athletes came together to celebrate the accomplishments of both individuals and teams from the 2011-2012 season. Among those athletes and teams, NCWC boasted 50 USA South All-Conference selections, three USA South Championships, two Players of the Year, one Coach of the Year and one NCAA tournament berth. Highlighting the night’s winners were the honors given for the Male and Female Student-Athlete of the Year, along with the Male and Female Athlete of the Year.
Junior Samantha Urquhart of women's basketball and senior Matt Dougherty of men's basketball took home Student-Athlete of the Years honors. Both are current members of the President’s Honors List, as well as the USA South All-Academic Team. Urquhart, a junior Education major, was a Third Team selection on the hardwood, while Dougherty, a senior double-majoring in Mathematics and Business, was honored as an Academic All-District selection earlier in the spring.
The final awards of the night saw volleyball senior Mackenzie Tingle and men's tennis sophomore Robert Kjellberg honored as the Department's Athletes of the Year. Tingle was a First Team All-Conference selection and the Most Valuable Player of her squad, finishing her career ranked second all-time in assists and as only one of two players to garner All-Conference accolades on four occasions in her sport.
Kjellberg recently led his Bishops to their fourth straight USA South regular season title and tournament championship. A member of the 3rd-ranked doubles tandem in the nation and individually ranked #23, he was tabbed a First Team All-Conference selection and member of the USA South All-Tournament team.
