Fayetteville, N.C. - The USA South Athletic Conference has released its weekly awards for March 11th, and three Battling Bishops earned honors in their respective sports. Junior Robert Kjellberg and freshman Johan Ljungdahl gave men's tennis a third straight sweep, while baseball's Ciro Norzagaray picked up his second Rookie of the Week accolade.
Men's Tennis
Player of the Week
Robert Kjellberg, N.C. Wesleyan
- The junior from Vetlanda, Sweden earned a 2-1 record
at #1 singles last week against opponents from three
nationally-ranked teams. Kjellberg's victories came over the
11th-ranked player in the nation and the 8th-ranked player in the
West Region. His lone singles loss came in a 14-12 third-set
tiebreaker. In double action, Kjellberg teamed with Artsiom Prostak
to earn a win over Pomona-Pitzer's top duo.
Men's Tennis
Rookie of the Week
Johan Ljungdahl, N.C. Wesleyan
- The freshman from Stockholm, Sweden posted a 3-0
singles record at the #3 position for the 15th-ranked Bishops last
week against opponents from three nationally-ranked teams. Two of
Ljungdahl's three victories came over opponents who are currently
ranked in the West Region, while in doubles play, he teamed with
Peter Hviid to earn a win over Pomona-Pitzer.
Baseball
Rookie of the Week
Ciro Norzagaray, N.C.
Wesleyan - The Mexico City, Mexico
freshman earned a victory in his only appearance last week in a
7-6, 13-inning, victory over USA South foe Averett. Norzagaray came
on in relief in the top of the ninth inning and proceeded to toss
the final five scoreless innings, allowing no runs on just one hit
with zero walks and seven strikeouts.
