Bishop Men & Women Secure Trio of Tennis Wins

Rocky Mount, N.C. - The men's and women's tennis teams of N.C. Wesleyan secured a trio of USA South wins on Friday and Saturday, as the men swept league foes Maryville and Ferrum, while the women picked up an 8-1 victory over the Panthers.

Wesleyan's men, currently ranked #15 in the nation, simply dominated its league opponents on both days. Friday's match versus Maryville saw the Bishops take an early lead in the match with three 8-0 wins in doubles play.

NCWC went on to secure five 6-0, 6-0 wins in singles play at the #1 through #5 seeds as Johan Ljungdahl, Peter Hviid, Mikhail Konnov, Eduardo Ugalde and Panayot Kusidi did not surrender a game. Clifton Lesak sealed the sweep with a 6-3, 6-3 win at the #6 flight.

Saturday's match versus Ferrum was much like Friday's, with the Bishops giving up just eight games in doubles and singles play combined. Marcus Pola replaced Lesak in the line-up for a straight-set win in singles action.

On the women's side, the Bishops dropped their third straight heartbreaker, 5-4, to Maryville on Friday. Senior Samia Kacher teamed with freshman Katie Beeman for an 8-5 win at #1 doubles, while the senior duo of Tori Jones and Bristy Parker were 8-6 winners at the two slot.

In singles play, Kacher and Parker tallied straight-set wins at the #1 and #4 positions, respectively. The Scots' Maggie Dew, however, managed a 7-6 win in the third set at the #3 flight to pull off the Maryville victory.

Wesleyan, however, bounced back with a dominating 8-1 win over Ferrum on Saturday. The Bishops gave up just one game in doubles play, while Kacher, Beeman, Parker, Tija Riley and Dori Brooks all won in straights in singles competition. The Panthers' lone point came by default at the #2 position.

The Bishop women return to action at William Peace University on Wednesday, while the NCWC men will next play at Averett on Saturday.
