Ayers, Bjarnason Earn USA South Weekly Honors

Fayetteville, N.C. - The USA South Athletic Conference has released its weekly awards for September 24th, and two Battling Bishops earned honors in their repective sports. Senior Shana Ayers of volleyball was named Defensive Player of the Week, while freshman Andri Bjarnason of men's soccer was tabbed Rookie of the Week.

Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week
Shana Ayers, N.C. Wesleyan - The senior defensive specialist from Frankfort, Kentucky averaged 6.9 digs per set last week as Bishops posted a 3-1 record. In a 3-2 loss to Methodist, Ayers recorded 26 digs, three assists and one service ace. In a 3-0 win over Guilford, Ayers totaled 18 digs, three kills and three service aces. In a 3-0 win over USA South rival Averett, Ayers posted 26 digs. Finally, in a 3-1 victory over USA South foe William Peace, Ayers totaled 34 digs, two assists, one kill and one service ace.

Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week
Andri Bjarnason, N.C. Wesleyan - The freshman forward from Bolungarvik, Iceland scored a goal and assisted on another in a 3-1 victory over USA South foe Averett, the team's only action of last week. Bjarnason tied the score with a goal in the 50th minute then assisted on an insurance tally in the 89th minute.  This is Bjarnason's second Rookie of the Week honor this season.
