Miller to Head Bishop Lacrosse, Averett Joins ATC Staff

Rocky Mount, N.C. – The North Carolina Wesleyan Department of Athletics has announced two additions to its staff. Emily Miller has been selected as the next head coach for the Battling Bishops’ lacrosse program, while Ryan Averett has joined Wesleyan’s Sports Medicine staff.

Emily Miller takes over the reigns of the N.C. Wesleyan women’s lacrosse program after spending the past year as the Sports Development Manager at Tacoma (Wash.) South Sound Sports. There, she developed and managed the company’s Club Development Program, in addition to overseeing and directing marquee community events at the Tacoma Dome. During that time, Miller also served as head lacrosse coach for Pacific Lutheran University’s club team, a program that she was instrumental in getting off the ground.

From October 2010 to January 2012, Miller served as owner/director of coaching for Wildfire Lacrosse in Chandler, Arizona, where she created and operated a profitable venture for developing club-level lacrosse. The endeavor allowed her to gain valuable experience in hiring, training and supervising staff, as well as developing strategic partnerships with local businesses and schools, which should prove beneficial in recruiting.

Miller’s additional coaching experience includes a two-year stint as varsity head coach at Corona High School in Tempe, Arizona from 2007-2009. She also served as vice president of the Arizona Girls Lacrosse Association during that span, while founding and coordinating events for ThirdBiotech.

Miller is a 2009 graduate of Arizona State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Park and Recreation Management with a Therapeutic Recreation emphasis. While at ASU, she was an active member of the university’s club lacrosse program, and upon graduation, earned an athletic scholarship to Tiffin University in Ohio.

Miller subsequently began her Master’s work at Tiffin while utilizing her final year of NCAA eligibility as a player/coach for the Dragons’ inaugural lacrosse team. She completed her M.B.A. with a Sports Management emphasis in December of 2011.

“I am honored to be given this opportunity with the North Carolina Wesleyan lacrosse program,” said Miller, continuing, “I’d like to thank Coach Thompson and the entire staff for the southern hospitality I’ve been shown thusfar. I have high aspirations for the program and look forward to getting started immediately.”

Also new to the Bishop staff is Ryan Averett, who recently joined NCWC’s Athletic Training Staff.

Averett comes to Rocky Mount after serving as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at Arizona State University last year. Originally from Cedar City, Utah, he attended Southern Utah University and received his Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training in 2008.

Upon graduation, Averett took his talents to A.T. Still University in Mesa, Ariz., where he will receive his Master of Science in Athletic Training pending the completion of his thesis entitled “The Effects of an Eccentric Strengthening Component for Shoulder Rehabilitation in Patients with Shoulder Impingement.”

The Department of Athletics welcomes both Emily and Ryan to the Battling Bishop family!
