NCWC Tennis Keeps Rolling, Two Players Earn Weekly Awards

Rocky Mount, N.C. - The men's and women's tennis teams of North Carolina Wesleyan continued USA South play over the weekend, each posting dominating league wins at Huntingdon and LaGrange.

On Saturday at Huntingdon, the Bishop men posted a 9-0 sweep and the women a 7-2 victory.

NCWC's men jumped a 3-0 lead in doubles play after the duos of Sebastian Sikh/Peter Hviid, J.D. Telles/Mike Konnov, and Ioannis Brokakis/Eduardo Ugalde cruised to wins. The Hawks' (6-3, 4-2 USA South) best scoring chance came at the top seed where Sikh/Hviid were 8-6 winners. The Bishops went on to secure the shutout in singles with straight-set victories by Sikh, Brokakis, Telles, Mark Sokolov, Konnov, and Henry Lam at #1 through #6 singles, respectively.

On the women's side, Wesleyan posted a 7-2 win. The Hawks (10-3, 6-2 USA South) actually held a 2-1 lead after completing doubles, with the NCWC duo of Valeria Berber/Stephany Barbera earning the Bishops lone point with an 8-2 win at the top seed. Berber, Barbera, Florencia Sorrentino, Ana Diaz, Andrea Tobar, and Ariana Paz proceeded to sweep singles action. Wesleyan posted staight-set wins at #1 through #5, while Paz won at #6 in a 12-10 superset.

On Sunday, NCWC faced off with LaGrange. Wesleyan's men tallied their fifth straight league shutout with a 9-0 blanking of the Panthers (5-6, 3-5 USA South), while the women cruised to an 8-1 win. LC's women (9-5, 6-4 USA South) tallied their lone point at #6 singles in straights.

For their weekend efforts, Sikh and Brokakis swept the USA South Player and Rookie of the Week awards on Monday for the first time this season. Sikh (Eskilstuna, Sweden) and Brokakis (Heraklion, Greece) combined to go 8-0 in both singles and doubles play last week, with Sikh anchoring the top seed on each side. Brokakis' wins came at #2 singles and #3 doubles.

Wesleyan's men are now 10-6 overall, 8-0 in USA South play, while NCWC's women move to 10-4 overall, 9-1 in league action. Both teams continue conference play on Tuesday when they host William Peace University at the Slick Family Foundation Tennis Center.
