Battling Bishops Wrap Up Mid-Week Soccer & Volleyball Action

Rocky Mount, N.C. - North Carolina Wesleyan's soccer and volleyball teams were all in action on Wednesday afternoon and evening versus a trio of non-conference opponents.

The Battling Bishop men's soccer team (1-2) hosted its 2015 home opener versus 8th-ranked Christopher Newport University at Scalf Field. The Captains took a 1-0 lead at the 11:53 mark, but NCWC sophomore Julius Oskarsson answered with his first score of the season just 47 seconds later. Oskarsson took the ball from just past midfield and beat five defenders for the shot.

Freshman Olafur Einarsson made it 2-1 with a penalty kick goal in the 25th minute, while Caetano Viegas booted home a Thorfinnur Thorfinnsson assist minutes later for a 3-1 Bishop lead. Unfortunately, CNU countered with at trio of unanswered goals of their own in the final seven minutes of the period to take a 4-3 advantage into the half. The two squads proceeded to fight through a scoreless second half to seal the 4-3 final.

CNU held a 12-11 edge in shots on the day, with NCWC keeper Jesper Olsson tallying four saves.

On the women's side, Wesleyan (1-1-1) traveled to Randolph College for a night match-up with the Wildcats. Despite dominating offensively with a 22-10 advantage in shots, the Bishops struggled to find the back of the net. Down 1-0 late in the second half, freshman Lauren Seegel was able to net the equalizer off an Ella Burkhart assist with less than four minutes remaining to force overtime.

In the extra periods, NCWC goalie Vanessa Batchelor and RC keeper Stephanie Quirk combined for five saves to secure the 1-1 draw.

In volleyball, NCWC (0-3) traveled to the University of Mary Washington to take on a talented Eagle team that is currently receiving votes in the AVCA national top-25. The Bishops turned in a solid performance, taking the second set by a 25-22 score and nearly forcing a fifth set before dropping a 28-26 decision in the fourth.
