Rocky Mount, N.C. - N.C. Wesleyan hosted Ferrum College in a USA South soccer doubleheader on Tuesday, splitting a pair of 1-0 matches with the Panthers at Scalf Field. The women opened up play with a tough 1-0 defeat, while the men got a late goal from Caetano Viegas to remain perfect in league play.
On the women's side, senior keeper Vanessa Batchelor made four saves in the first half to secure a 0-0 tie at the break. The Panthers' Alexis McCargo finally broke through with the lone score of the match at the 61:47 mark, and Ferrum would later survive a pair of Bishop shots off the post in the final 15 minutes to secure the win.
In the nightcap, Wesleyan's men dominated the shot count 24-7, but Panther goalie Sydnor Trent turned in a phenominal performance with 15 saves in net to keep the match scoreless. The Bishops, however, would not be denied when Thorfinnur Thorfinnsson sent a cornerkick deep across the box, which was headed by Olafur Einarsson in the direction of Viegas. With four near-misses to his credit already, the junior made his final attempt count, beating Trent to his right for the gamewinner.
NCWC's Jesper Olsson made a trio of saves in goal to preserve the shutout. Wesleyan's men have now won four straight and are a perfect 3-0 in conference action.
Both the men and women continue league play this weekend at Maryville and Covenant.
