Battling Bishops Wrap Up Mid-Week Athletics Action

Rocky Mount, N.C. - North Carolina Wesleyan's golf, men's soccer and volleyball teams have all been in action this week. Soccer and volleyball faced league opponents on Wednesday, which followed golf's fall finale on Monday and Tuesday.

Wesleyan golf wrapped up its fall slate on Monday and Tuesday at the Chick-Fil-A Intercollegiate hosted by Berry College. The three-round event was held at the par-72 Stonebridge Golf Club in Rome, Georgia. The Bishops managed a 6th-place finish among 12 teams, beating out USA South foes Covenant and Maryville in the standings. Individually, sophomore Ben Gillon rebounded from an opening round 81 to card below-par rounds of 71 and 70 in two and three. His 222 placed him at +6 for the tourney and secured 12th-place among the 69-man field. Click here for complete stats.

The Battling Bishop men's soccer team (7-6-1, 5-2 USA South) traveled to league rival Methodist University for a make-up contest on Wednesday, falling behind 4-0 at the half. The Monarchs went on to tally two more goals in the final period to secure a 6-0 final. Wesleyan got out-shot 22-8 and had a trio of shots-on-goal turned away.

NCW volleyball (9-14, 5-9 USA South) wrapped up mid-week action with a heartbreaking 3-2 loss at division-leading Meredith College later that evening. Set scores were 25-27, 25-10, 18-25, 25-19, and 15-10. Tori Stewart (13), Taylor Smith (12), and Samantha Morton (11) combined for 36 of the Bishops' 52 kills on the night. Current USA South Defensive Player of the Week Christina Huber managed 22 digs, while Ayla Brewer dished out 45 assists.

While golf has now completed its fall schedule, both men's soccer and volleyball will continue USA South play this weekend. Volleyball travels to Maryville College on Saturday to face MVC and Covenant College, while men's soccer hosts a pair of league contests with Huntingdon and LaGrange. Saturday's Homecoming match versus the Hawks is slated for 3:00pm at Scalf Field.
