Wesleyan Wins Trio of Games at Cal Ripken Tourney

Myrtle Beach, S.C. - North Carolina Wesleyan's baseball team traveled to Myrtle Beach, S.C. over Spring Break to compete in the 2012 Cal Ripken Experience Tournament. The Battling Bishops came away with three wins in six outings, led by senior Andre' Nichols who batted .375 and turned in a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage over the six-game span.

Wesleyan opened up play with a 6-3 loss to Alma on Monday afternoon and then dropped a close 6-5 decision to Johnson & Wales  in Tuesday's first game. Tied 5-5 in the bottom of the ninth, J&W got a two-out single to plate the game-winning run.

The Bishops earned their first win of the tourney with a dominating 9-2 victory over the College of Staten Island on Tuesday evening. Sophomore Hayden Williams went 4-for-4 at the plate with a pair of runs scored, while Nichols drove in two runs of his own.

Sophomore Brandon Roberts picked up the win on the mound, scattering three hits over 5.2 innings and allowing just one earned run. Freshman Hatteras Brooks recorded his first save by virtue of his 3.1 scoreless innings pitched.

On Wednesday morning, NCWC picked up another win over Staten Island by a 5-4 tally. Once again tied in the bottom of the ninth, it was Wesleyan that delivered the big blow this time with a game-winning RBI-single by Jake Alexander. Senior Shane Flynn was credited with the win.

NCWC won its third straight with a 6-2 victory over J&W later in the afternoon. Freshman Brad Guengerich paced the offense with three RBIs, while Jake Swartout tossed six complete en route to the win. Dustin Bare threw three shutout innings to earn the save.

Wesleyan wrapped up play on Thursday with a 5-0 loss to Manchester.

Now 8-9 overall, the Bishops return to USA South play over the weekend at Averett University.
