Wesleyan Baseball Goes 1-3 at Cal Ripken Tourney

Myrtle Beach, S.C. - North Carolina Wesleyan's baseball squad went 1-3 at this week's Cal Ripken Experience Tournament in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Battling Bishops split Tuesday's doubleheader with Penn State-Berks before dropping a pair of contests to York (Pa.) and Catholic on Wednesday.

Wesleyan rebounded from a 10-3 loss in Tuesday's opener versus PSU-Berks for a 4-2 win in the nightcap. Down 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth, freshman Jason Riley hit an inside-the-park two-run homer to put the Bishops on top 3-2. That same inning saw James Kornegay plate Hayden Williams with a sac-fly to centerfield to make the score 4-2, and Dillon Moore would do the rest on the mound, tossing two scoreless innings to secure the save.

Starting pitcher Robert Mondoux picked up his first win of the season, going five complete and allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out four.

Both of Wednesday's games saw the Bishops fall behind early. York opened up a 8-2 lead after five innings en route to an eventual 12-3 win, while Catholic jumped out to a 10-0 advantage and held on for an 11-7 victory. York's pitching held NCWC to just four hits on the day, while Riley and fellow freshman James Lovett combined for six of Wesleyan's 11 hits in the finale.

The Bishops (7-13) return to USA South play at home this weekend when they welcome Averett University to Bauer Field for a three-game set. Friday's opener is slated for a 2:00pm start, followed by 1:00pm and 2:00pm games on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
