Williams, Swartout Highlight Series Win over Averett

Rocky Mount, N.C. - Junior Hayden Williams and senior Jake Swartout highlighted this weekend's baseball action at Bauer Field, as the Bishop duo helped N.C. Wesleyan to a pair of USA South wins over Averett University. Williams delivered a gamewinning RBI-double in the bottom of the 13th inning of Friday's 7-6 win, while Swartout tossed a complete-game shutout of the Cougars in Saturday's 3-0 victory.

On Friday, the Bishops (9-14, 6-6 USA South) opened up a 4-0 lead after five complete thanks to two-spots in the second and fifth innings. Ricardo Ciuffetelli, Alexis Rodriguez, Jake Alexander and James Lovett each drove in runs to back starting pitcher Will Beasley, who would eventually get a no-decision after giving up two runs on four hits over six innings.

After plating a pair of runs in the sixth, the Cougars (16-6, 8-4 USA South) later took a 6-4 lead with four unearned runs in the seventh. The big blast came from the bat of Jordan Kidd, who belted a three-run homer to cap the inning.

In the bottom of the ninth, Wesleyan battled back to force extras when freshmen Justin DiSanto and Jason Riley led off the frame with a single and walk, respectively. DiSanto was eventually plated by an Alexander single, while sophomore J.J. Rodriguez drove home Riley with a single of his own. AU's Cody Beaver then took the mound to pitch his team out of a bases-loaded jam.

With freshman hurler Ciro Norzagaray holding Averett in check over his five innings of work, Alexander got the Bishop offense going in the 13th with a lead-off single. He was promptly bunted to second by freshman Macon Hammond, setting the stage for Williams' heriocs.

Norzagaray (2-0) picked up the win, allowing just one hit and striking out seven. Alexander finished 4-for-6 at the plate.

On Saturday, it was all Swartout (3-2) as the senior righty scattered five hits and struck out five en route to his team-best third win of the season. The Bishops got all the offense they needed in a three-run sixth inning that saw Rodriquez drive in one and Lovett two runs.

Sunday's game saw both starting pitchers get chased after 3.2 innings. The Cougars were able to do more damage than the Bishops, however, avoiding the sweep with a 13-3 win. Sophomore Hatteras Brooks (2-2) suffered the loss, while Rodriguez finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs.

Wesleyan returns to action on Wednesday when the Bishops host Stevenson University. First pitch is slated for 3:00pm at Bauer Field.
