Long Named Coach of the Year, Six Bishops Honored

Fayetteville, N.C. - The USA South Athletic Conference has released its 2013 postseason awards for baseball, with total of 47 student-athletes being named to the All-Conference teams.  Six Battling Bishop players were recognized, including First Team honorees Jake Alexander and Ciro Norzagaray, while head coach Charlie Long was named Coach of the Year for the fourth time in his career.

In his 17th season at the helm of Wesleyan baseball, Long collects his fourth Coach of the Year honor after leading the Bishops to a 15-9 mark in conference play, which was good for a second-place finish in the league standings. In the USA South Preseason Coaches Poll, Long's squad was picked to finish tied for seventh. He now leads N.C. Wesleyan into the USA South tournament as the second-seeded team.

Much of Long's success can be attributed to First Teamers Jake Alexander and Ciro Norzagaray. A senior shortstop from Virginia Beach, Alexander batted .338 during the regular season (.356 in USA South play) and led the team in hits (49), doubles (8) and RBIs (23). Norzagaray, a freshman from Mexico City, posted a team-best .385 batting average. Honored as a utility player, he also turned in a 3-0 record on the mound with a solid 2.05 earned run average.

Also garnering recognition were Honorable Mentions J.J. Rodriguez, James Lovett and Jake Swartout. Rodriguez batted .333 with a team-high 19 RBIs in conference play, while Lovett batted .310 with a .986 fielding percentage behind the plate. Swartout picked up five wins on the mound in league action and currently boasts a 2.88 ERA on the season.

Elsewhere around the league, Christopher Newport teammates Justin Weaver, Austin Chrismon and Brandon Taylor earned Player of the Year, Pitcher of the Year and Rookie Pitcher of the Year accolades, respectively, while Maryville's Zach Blonder collected Rookie of the Year honors.

The USA South also recognized an All-Sportsmanship Team, consisting of one member from each competing school. North Carolina Wesleyan was represented by junior Alexis Rodriguez.
