Greensboro, N.C. - Freshman Drew Tubb tossed the first complete game of his collegiate career on Saturday afternoon, helping his Battling Bishop baseball team notch a 6-1 win in the final game of their 3-game set at Greensboro College. The Pride had previously taken the first two games by 4-3 and 13-0 scores before Tubb's stellar performance allowed NCWC to snap an 8-game skid.
After dropping the first game of Saturday's league twinbill by a 13-0 score, Tubb and GC starter Tyler Garam engaged in a pitcher's dual through the first six innings of the series finale. Wesleyan finally broke through in the seventh when Cedrick Kornegay plated Trey Croom with a sac-fly to center. Logan Andrews added a solo homer in the eighth, which was followed by RBI-doubles by Croom and Kornegay for a 5-0 Bishop lead.
The Pride (7-7, 4-2 USA South) ended Tubb's shutout bid in their half of the eight with an RBI-groundout by Jacob Rodriguez, but NCWC got it back in the ninth with an RBI-double by Alec Titmus. Tubb (3-1) proceeded to retire GC 1-2-3 in the ninth to secure his third win of the season. He scattered seven hits and struck out two, allowing the single run in the eighth.
Offensively, Croom finished 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored, while Kornegay went 1-for-3 with three RBI.
Wesleyan had previously opened the series on Friday with a 4-3 loss in extra innings. Junior Nate Gardner turned in a solid performance on the mound, going nine innings and allowing two runs on seven hits with four strikeouts.
Gardner helped himself in the top of the ninth, driving in the game-tying run with an RBI-double to force extras. An RBI-single by Brad Pennington in the 10th put Gardner on tap for the the win, but the Pride plated two runs in their at-bat to secure the walk-off victory. Sophomore Luke Mills (0-1) took the loss after giving up the final two runs.
The Bishops (8-12, 3-6 USA South) kick off a 6-game homestand on Thursday when Randolph-Macon College visits Bauer Field for a non-conference tilt. First pitch is slated for 3:00pm.
