Baseball Routs Brevard in Game 1

MARION, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College Baseball team routed conference foe Brevard College 16-5 on the road Friday evening in the first game of a weekend series at Big League Camp in Marion, N.C.

Seniors Brandon Wheat and Nate Gardner got Wesleyan off on the right foot hitting an RBI triple and RBI single respectively in the first inning before the same duo and junior 2B Brad Pennington each drove in runs in the 2nd inning to stake the Bishops out to a 5-1 lead.

After Wesleyan would see their lead trimmed all the way down to one at 6-5 after 7 innings, the Battling Bishops would then put the game out of reach with a season-high 10 run 8th inning to take the game 16-5.

Junior 3B Trey Posilero began the 8th inning scoring with an RBI double before Pennington tripled to drive in three runs and push the Bishops' lead to 10-5. Senior CF Cedrick Kornegay then crushed a two-run homer, his first, to make it 12-5. Outfielders Logan Andrews and Kevin Berry would then add RBI singles each while Wesleyan also scored on a wild pitch and an error for the big 10 run frame.

NCWC totaled 14 hits in the game led by a team-best four hits from Wheat. Pennington would also lead the team with a season-high of 4 RBIs while scoring 3 runs with Kornegay going 3 for 5 as well. Eight different Bishops recorded hits in the game while 7 drove in runs.

Pitching-wise, senior starter Brynner Porter (2-0) led the way for a win by tossing 5 and 2/3 innings allowing five hits and 3 runs on 4 walks and 7 strikeouts. Junior Reliever Michael Smith also tossed two scoreless innings.

The win improves the Bishops to 5-3 overall and 1-2 in the USA SOUTH. Wesleyan is back in action today at Noon to battle Brevard (3-7, 0-3) in a doubleheader with game two set to follow at 3 PM.
