Baseball's Clark To Retire

N.C. Wesleyan assistant baseball coach Greg Clark was planning to retire at the end of the 2020 baseball season, but his timeframe was unfortunately sped up due to the COVID-19 global pandemic that has canceled the remainder of Wesleyan's athletic season.

Clark returned to his alma mater as head junior varsity baseball coach in the fall of 2012 and went on to coach for 8 seasons here at Wesleyan. A 1999 NCWC Athletics Hall of Fame inductee and 2013 USA South Hall of Fame selection, Clark was four-year letterwinner for the Battling Bishops from 1979 to 1982 and still holds the NCAA Division III record for stolen bases in a career with 202, while his stolen base percentage of .918 (202/220) ranks seventh nationally.

Clark was a 1981 AACBC Baseball All-American -- the first in program history -- and was named the NCAA Regional Tournament Most Valuable Player that same season while playing in the Div. III World Series in 1981 and '82 as well. He went on to garner Regional and World Series All-Tournament team honors in 1982, in addition to being named the Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (now USA South) Player of the Year. A four-time All-Conference selection and two-time All-District honoree, Clark was also recognized as the NCWC Male Athlete of the Year in 1981 and 1982.

A 1982 graduate of the College, Clark went on to play in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization before returning to the area to begin a 30-year career as a teacher/coach with the Nash/Rocky Mount school system.  His wife, Lisa, is also a Wesleyan alum, as is his son Tyler, who followed in his father's footsteps as a four-year letterwinner for the Battling Bishop baseball program from 2010-2014.

"It was great," commented Clark on his son wanting to play for NC Wesleyan as well. "He never wanted to think about playing anywhere other than Wesleyan.  My wife played Volleyball and Softball here as well.  We are very proud of our Wesleyan roots."

Clark said he was honored to have been entered in the NCWC Hall of Fame with Moe Bauer, Don Scalf, Jean Edge, former head baseball coach Mike Fox, Roger Taylor, and Jetanna McClain in 1999.

"I am proud to be part of the Wesleyan baseball tradition," said Clark, when asked what it meant to be a Bishop for so many years. "I still have teammates that I am very close with."

"I have to give much of the credit for my success to former Coach Tony Guzzo, who was a great motivator and teacher and also a NCWC HOF member."

Clark was a teacher for many years, but he missed the game and he said that he tried to stay involved as much as possible and even helped Coach Fox as an assistant coach for two different fall seasons.

After retiring after 30 years of teaching, Clark started coaching at Wesleyan when they added another assistant position in 2012.  "I would like to give thanks to Coach John Thompson and Coach Charlie Long for that opportunity," commented Clark.

Finally, when asked how he felt retiring during this abbreviated season,

"I don't really know how to react. It is tough for everyone," said Clark. "I feel bad for all that may have their playing career end this way."
