Wesleyan Players Help Bandits Win CVCSL Title

ROCKY MOUNT, NC- The NC Wesleyan College Baseball team sent four of its own players, pitchers Derrick CarterAlex Crosby and Zach Woolard, as well as outfielder Max Johnson to play for the Tarboro River Bandits in the Carolina-Virginia Collegiate Summer League this year and came away with a 27-11 record en route to winning the title.

 NOTES***Crosby recently helped the Bandits throw a combined no-hitter on July 7 in the 4-1 exhibition win over GameTime Prospects. Crosby struck out 3 of 4 batters in the 6th inning in his appearance to keep the no-hitter intact.

*Also, another NC Wesleyan pitcher, LHP Derrick Carter also recently joined the River Bandits roster prior to the July 4 weekend to help the team overcome some injury concerns, while Johnson was a late season add to the roster as well. Johnson went on to record hits and quality at-bats in important games for the Bandits down the stretch as well. 

 

"We are excited for Alex, Derrick, Max, and Zach to get a chance to play this summer in a quality league," commented Wesleyan Head Baseball Coach Greg Clifton. "We hope that they will gain some experience that will help them both on the mound and at the plate for us next spring."

Woolard, a sophomore RHP from Pinetown, NC, threw 9 and 2/3 innings for the Bishops during this abbreviated season with 6 strikeouts.  Crosby, a sophomore LHP from Wilson, NC, also threw 5 and 1/3 innings with 5 strikeouts and a 3.38 ERA. Carter, a junior LHP, from Rock Mount, threw 14 innings for the Bishops in 2020 striking out 11 and going 1-1.

Johnson, a senior outfielder and native of Wilmington, was a middle of the order bat for the Bishops saw his senior season cut short due to the COVID pandemic, but was 2nd on the Bishops in 2020 in hits and third in average hitting .292 with 8 extra-base hits and 6 RBIs.
