BALTIMORE, MD - The NC Wesleyan College Baseball team secured a 5-3 non-conference win over Cortland St., NY on Saturday morning in the first game of their Baltimore Invitational at Johns Hopkins University.

After allowing two early unearned runs in the first inning on RBI singles, senior starter Derrick Carter (1-0) would settle in nicely and go on to toss 6 consecutive shutout innings after the first allowing just those two runs on 8 hits with two strikeouts to get the win. Freshman reliever Dylan Cheeley would then throw the eighth and ninth innings to get the save striking out two.

Leading the offense was senior 1B Emry Jackson as he knocked a solo home run in the third and then drove in DH Zachary Scott in the 5th with a single. The game would remain tied at 2 through 8 innings before Wesleyan scored the go-ahead runs in the 8th.

Jackson led off the 8th with a single before catcher Jaiden Barker walked. 2B Davie Morgan then reached via throwing error bringing in Jackson from second. After an intentional walk to CF Drifton Padgett loaded the bases, junior LF Zach Lyon then came up and was hit by a pitch to drive in Barker giving NCWC a 4-2 lead.

An RBI single from Morgan in the ninth then made it 5-3 Bishops before Cheeley finished it off in the ninth. Padgett also recorded a stolen base in the game as he reached via walk. Cortland falls to 4-1 with the loss.

NCWC 7, M.I.T 0

Wesleyan improved to 4-3 and went right back to action to battle M.I.T. on Saturday afternoon in the second game of the Invitational. The Bishops pitching stood tall in this one combining to shut out MIT 7-0 behind pitcher Danny Thompson and Payne Stolsworth.

Thompson, a sophomore starter, threw 6 innings of shutout ball allowing just 5 hits and walking two but striking out a career-high 13 batters. Stolsworth then came on to relieve Thompson and threw a hitless 3 innings walking just three and striking out four to get the save.

After Wesleyan scored a run in the first on a groundout, Morgan came through in the third inning with a solo home run while sophomore SS Tyson Bass ,pictured below, followed a few batters later with a three-run home run to give the Bishops a 5-0 lead. Wesleyan then added another run in the 4th on a fielder's choice while Zach Lyon drove in the final run in the 8th inning on another RBI groundout.

Morgan finished a triple shy of hitting for the cycle as he went 4 for 5 with two doubles, a single and his solo homer. 3B Jackson Hobbs also recorded a multi-hit game while he also walked twice as he reached base four times.

The Bishops are now 5-3 on the year and will next battle host Johns Hopkins on Sunday at 2:00 pm.
