Baseball Rolls over SVU 14-2 in Game One

BUENA VISTA, Va. - The NC Wesleyan College Baseball team rolled to a comfortable 14-2 road win in 7 innings on Friday in the opening game of their series with conference foe Southern Virginia.

 After SVU got out to a 1-0 lead after one, Wesleyan came back with a run in the second as junior 2B Davie Morgan stole home on a pickoff play at first base before scoring 3 runs in the 4th to take a 4-2 lead. A sacrifice fly from junior LF Zach Lyon drove in sophomore SS Tyson Bass before back-to-back RBI singles from senior 1B Emry Jackson and junior catcher Jean Lagreca made it 4-2. 

A three-run homer from Morgan in the 5th inning then put the Bishops into a commanding lead at 7-2. Then in the 6th inning, the Bishops added on 7 more runs starting with a two-run single from junior 3B Jackson Hobbs and another two-run knock from sophomore DH Zach Scott. Finally, a three-run homer from Emry Jackson finished it off 14-2.

Senior starter Derrick Carter pitched six solid inning allowing just two runs on 6 hits with a walk and a season-high 11 strikeouts to get the win and improve to 3-0. Senior reliever Kevin Williams also tossed a scoreless inning with a strikeout.

Bass led the offense with four hits on the day while senior CF Drifton Padgett and Emry Jackson each recorded three hits apiece. Bass led with two doubles while Jackson drove in four runs. 

Wesleyan improves to 8-8 on the year and 1-0 in the East Division with the win and will next take on SVU in a double header Saturday beginning at 12 Noon.
