BASEBALL
Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Danny Thompson, N.C. Wesleyan - The sophomore from Pollocksville, North Carolina set a modern-day program record with 17 strikeouts in a complete-game, 11-inning, 5-3 victory over USA South foe Averett in his only appearance on the mound for the Battling Bishops last week. Thompson allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits with two walks while throwing 140 pitches.
Thompson is now 4-2 on the year with a 2.58 ERA and a team-best 60 strikeouts. The 15-10 Bishops will next be in action on Tuesday on the road in Virginia at Randolph Macon College.
MEN'S TENNIS
Men's Tennis Player of the Week
Jhonny Acosta, N.C. Wesleyan - The senior from Ita, Paraguay earned 2-1 singles and doubles records, all at the number-one position, last week for the Battling Bishops. In singles, Acosta's lone loss was against opposition from Division I Campbell while his wins came against two top-15 ranked players in the Central Region, the top-ranked player from Case-Western Reserve and the 14th-ranked player from Kenyon. In doubles, Acosta teamed with JP Vallejo to defeat opposition from Division I Campbell and as well as 24th-ranked Kenyon.
Acosta is the reigning Fall 2021 ITA South Regional Champion.
Men's Doubles Team of the Week
Roberto Puig and Max Robinson, N.C. Wesleyan - The Battling Bishop senior duo earned a 2-0 record at the number-two doubles position last week. The 8-5 wins came over opposition from nationally-ranked Case-Western Reserve (#1) and Kenyon (#24). The doubles team from Kenyon was ranked 11th in the Central region.
They will next lead the 14-3 Bishops into a conference match at rival Methodist on Wednesday at 4:00 PM.
