NCWC Golf Wins Don Scalf Title

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C.- The N.C. Wesleyan College Golf team built on their first day lead and doubled it in round two to go on and win a team and individual title at their home opening Don Scalf Invitational on Monday from Belmont Lake Golf Club in Rocky Mount.

The Battling Bishops shot a first round 280 on Sunday and a tournament-best 297 on Monday to out-distance second place Greensboro College by 12 strokes 577-589 with third place Christopher Newport (Va.) finishing at 591 in the 13 team field. Virginia Union came in 4th with Averett (Va.) following in 5th place.

Winning the individual title for the Bishops in the tournament was junior Dustin Wood who shot a -4 under par 68 in the first round followed by a 73 in the second to finish at 141 and -3 under par.  Finishing in second place was fellow Bishop, sophomore Juan de Giacomi with a first round -3 69 and a 73 Monday to finish at -2 142. 

Senior Grady Anderson then placed 7th overall after rounds of 74 and 72 for a total of 146 (+2) while junior Mariano Silvestri finished tied for 10th with rounds of 69 and 79 for a 148 (+4) to complete the scoring.

Sophomore Inaki Beitia placed 19th with a 75 and a 78 for a total of 153 (+9) playing as an individual. Juniors Nicolas Strafe and Luke Thornton then placed 30th and 33rd respectively as Strafe shot a 79 and a 78 to finish at 157 (+13) while Thornton shot 78 and 80 for a 158.  Senior Alex Kidd also competed shooting rounds of 78 and 91 for a 169.

The Bishops are next in action on Oct. 1-2 at the Gordin Collegiate Classic in Columbus, Oh. hosted by Ohio Wesleyan.
