Wesleyan Golf Finishes 9th at Savannah Classic

SAVANNAH, Ga. - The 12th ranked NC Wesleyan College Golf team finished in 9th place at the Savannah Harbor Classic tournament, hosted by Emory University on Monday and Tuesday from The Club at Savannah Harbor in southeastern Georgia.

Wesleyan shot a 308 (+20) on Monday in the first round and improved that score by 5 strokes on Tuesday in round two by shooting a 303 to finish one stroke behind nationally ranked Washington & Lee for 8th place.

#3 Huntingdon College won the tournament with a 586 while the Bishops finished ahead of USA South foes, Piedmont and Covenant Colleges in the tough tournament that featured high winds in the first round. The Classic featured 12 ranked teams out of the 18 that attended.

The men were led by senior Mariano Silvestri who shot the most consistent rounds of the week firing a 75 (+3) on Monday and a 74 on Tuesday to place 17th overall with a 149 (+5).

Freshman Frankie Schmitt completed his first collegiate tournament by placing 33rd with a score of 153 and recording the lowest round for Wesleyan on the first day with a 73 (+1). 

Senior Grady Anderson then came back strong on day two improving by 8 strokes from his first round score to finish at 156 and in a tie for 50th out of 90 golfers with scores of 82 and 74. Junior Luke Thornton also finished in 50th with scores of 81 and 75 as he improved by 6 strokes on day two as well. Junior Nico Strafe also played consistent finishing in 66th place with scores of 79 and 81 for a 160.

Dan Shepherd of Methodist won the tournament with a -1 under par 143.

Wesleyan is back in action next week (March 11-12) at the Adidas Intercollegiate hosted by Ohio Wesleyan in Dataw Island, SC.
