#20 NCWC Golf Finishes 2nd at USA South Preview

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The 20th ranked NC Wesleyan College Golf team finished 2nd at the 2019 USA South Preview Tournament held at Benvenue Country Club in Rocky Mount on Monday. It was a small event to prepare conference schools for the 2020 Spring USA SOUTH Tournament that will be held from April 23-25.

8th ranked Methodist University won the one day 36-hole tournament by shooting rounds of 297 and 299 for a 20-over par 596. Wesleyan shot a morning round of 311 before improving by three strokes for a afternoon round of 308 for a 43-over 619 while William Peace shot 333 and 326 to take third with 659.

Methodist's Zane Brownrigg won the event with a 4-over par 148 after rounds of 76 and even par 72 to finish one stroke ahead of Wesleyan sophomore Frankie Schmitt. Schmitt shot a first round of 2-over 74 and held a one stroke lead going into the final hole before settling for a 3-over 75 and a 5-over 149 to finish 2nd.

Wesleyan senior Luke Thornton then placed 8th overall and 2nd on the team with a 10-over 154 as he shot rounds of 75 and 79. Freshman Luis Zurita was then third on the team and 10th overall with a 16-over 160 after shooting rounds of 82 and 78 as he improved by four strokes in Round two.

Seniors Dustin Wood and Nico Strafe then finished in a tie for 12th on the day after each shooting scores of 17-over 161. Wood improved by 9 shots in round two going from an 85 to a 76 in round two which was the 6th best round of the afternoon. Strafe shot rounds of 80  and 81 for the day.

The low round of the tournament was a 1-under 71 shot by Methodist's Brantley Phillips, who placed 4th.

The Bishops are back in action next week as they head to Destin, FL to compete in the GolfWeek D3 Fall Invitational from Oct. 14-15.
