Bishops Finish 19th at Guilford Tournament

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College Golf team finished in 19th place at the O'Briant-Jensen Memorial Tournament hosted by Guilford College (NC) at the Cardinal-Dye Course on Monday and Tuesday. The tournament consisted of nine top 25 teams and 7 USA South teams and tough regional competition.

The Bishops shot a 322 team score on Monday in the first round led by sophomore Frankie Schmitt's low round of 75. Wesleyan then improved by 17 strokes in round two shooting a 21-over 305 which was better than numerous teams in the field.

Emory's Logan Ryan won the tournament with a 5 under par 137 after his 65 today. Emory (Ga.) and Carnegie Mellon (Pa.) tied for the team title at 7 over 575 after both teams shot under par rounds on Tuesday.

Schmitt led the Bishops with a 63rd place finish (+10 152) out of the 120-man field. His 4-over 75 in the first round Monday was followed by a 6-over 77 in round two Tuesday that included 3 birdies on the back nine of his round. 

Senior Nico Strafe finished 2nd on the team and in a tie for 79th overall with his 14 over 156. Strafe improved by 8 shots from his first round shooting a team-best 74 in round two that included three birdies.

Fellow Senior Luke Thornton then placed next for the Bishops in 89th place as he improved by 6 strokes from his first round scores of 82 to post a 5-over par 76 on Tuesday that also included three birdies. Another senior in Dustin Wood then came next finishing 104th with rounds of 83 and 81 while freshman Luis Zurita then came in 109th but that was because of his first round 87. He improved by nine strokes in round two to shoot a 7-over par 78.

This wraps up the fall season for the Bishops. Their spring schedule will be released soon that will include them hosting the 2020 USA SOUTH Championships at Benvenue CC in Rocky Mount from April 23-25.
