Schmitt Places 18th at Golf's Savannah Invite

SAVANNAH, Ga. - The NC Wesleyan College Golf team opened their spring season on Monday and Tuesday at The Club in Savannah Harbor, GA at the par 72 Savannah Invitational, hosted by Berry College (Ga.).

Sophomore Frankie Schmitt led the Bishops this week with an 18th place finish at 3-under par overall after opening the tournament with a stellar 3-under par 69 in the first round. He followed that up with a 2-over 74 in the second round to sit in a tie for 26th place overall after 36 holes before shooting a 2-under par 70 in the third round on Tuesday to finish at 3-under par 213.

Schmitt recorded five birdies in the first round and three more in the second before registering six birdies in the final round to total 14 on the week.

Wesleyan, as a team, finished in 18th place overall with a 3-day score of 927 after rounds of 311, 314, and a 302 (14-over) on Tuesday, their best score of the week as four of their players shot their best round of the week in the third round. It was enough to finish ahead of Christopher Newport University by 3 strokes as well on Tuesday.

Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.) won the tournament by 7 strokes over runner-up Huntingdon.

Senior Dustin Wood shot a 6-over 78 in round one while sophomore Patricio Basta shot an 80. In the second round, Wood shot a team-best 1-over par 73 to sit in 75th place at 7-over 151 after two rounds.  Basta then recorded a 7-over 79 in the second round. Basta recorded two birdies and an eagle (-2 under par) in his first round while the duo combined for 7 birdies in the second round. Wood then fired an Even par 72 (including 3 birdies) in the third round on Tuesday to finish in a tie for 59th place at 7-over 223. Basta also improved by one stroke in the third round with his 6-over 78 to finish at 21-over 237.

Freshman Luis Zurita shot rounds of 84-90 over the first two days before shooting an 82 on Tuesday to finish at 256. Fellow freshman Joshua Moore made his season debut with rounds of 89, 88 and 84, which was his best of the week to finish 89th at 261.

The Bishops will next tee off on March 20-22 at the Jekyll Island Invite hosted by Oglethorpe Univ. in Georgia.
