Golf Finishes 2nd at Don Scalf Memorial Tournament

**Don Scalf was an Athletic Director, Basketball Coach, Golf Coach, and Professor at NC Wesleyan for a total of 36 years and is a 1999 NCWC athletic Hall of Fame Inductee.

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College Men's Golf team competed in their season/home opener on Sunday and Monday in the Don Scalf Memorial Tournament at nearby Belmont Lake GC in Rocky Mount.

The Bishop men played well overall finishing 2nd in the 9-team event with a 28-over par 604 total score falling to tournament winner Methodist University's 8-under par 568 score. Wesleyan shot a 15-over 303 on Sunday afternoon and a 13-over 301 on Monday. MU shot scores of 290 and 278.

Finishing in a tie for fourth, however, was Wesleyan's "B" team as well with a two day score of 647 after rounds of 325 and 322. Division II Chowan finished third overall while Shenandoah also tied for 4th. 

Methodist's Logan Thompson won the event with a 4-under par 140 as he shot a 67 on day two to win it.

Leading the way for the Bishops was senior captain Frankie Schmitt who tied for 6th with a 5-over par 149 including shooting an even par 72 on Monday. Freshman Matt Coltren then placed 8th for the Bishops with a 6-over 150 as he shot rounds of 73 and 77.

A trio of Bishops then came in 9th, 10th, and 11th place with fellow senior captain Patricio Basta placing 9th at 7-over 151 with rounds of 75 and 76. Freshman Myles Patterson then finished 10th at 8-over 152 after rounds of 77 and 75 while sophomore Santiago Larumbe was 11th at 10-over with scores of 78 and 76. 

Also playing well as an individual was freshman Juan Pielach with scores of 79 and 83 to finish tied for 16th at 18-over. Senior Jonathan Stallings and junior Augustin Spangenberg then finished 20th with 20-over 164s. Stallings shot rounds of 84 and 80 while Augustin had rounds of 83 and 81.

Freshmen Lucas Perez and Aidan Harrington then placed 24th and 25th with scores of 82 and 83 for Perez and 81 and 86 for Harrington. Fellow freshman Aiden Priestly-Koch, playing as an individual, then finished 32nd with scores of 85 and 87.

The Bishops will return to action this Saturday through Monday when they head to north Georgia to compete in the Oglethorpe Invitational.
